What to Expect in a Meeting

Our club meetings last for one hour, except for special events that may last a little longer. Every Toastmasters club follows an agenda but may run its meetings differently from other clubs.

Members sign-up on the agenda for speaking roles as well as functionary roles. By engaging in active participation, members gain self-confidence through developing listening and leadership skills.

The club president of the Findlay Old Millstream Toastmasters opens each meeting with the call to order and introduces the Toastmaster of the Day, who runs the meeting.

Meetings may include 1-2 prepared speeches, each usually of five to seven minutes in length.

Each speech is assigned a formal evaluator who will address a speaker's strengths and offer suggestions for improvement in a two to three minute presentation. Learning how to provide effective evaluations in an uplifting manner is an important feature of the Toastmasters educational program.

Meetings also include a section on Table Topics. This is a fun activity that helps one to deliver a short message while thinking fast. This is the part of the meeting where guests may participate but are never pressured to do so.

The General Evaluator will follow up the presentation portion of the meeting with reports from the timer and grammarian, who listens for pesky "um's/uh's/so's/you know's." The grammarian also identifies instances of exceptional words used in presentations and how many times the "Word of the Day" was used by members.

A short business meeting wraps up the program. Don't be surprised when members chat with you after the gavel officially ends the program.

"There's no way that if you get participation out of a person can they say you didn't rock it."  - Jam Master Jay
